True pioneers are people with the courage, resilience and grit to follow their dreams into new territory. To ‘stake a claim’ a hundred years ago meant pioneers registered a land claim by marking new territory with stakes. Times have changed. The new territory of today is the Information Age – and to stake a claim today still requires a pioneer mindset, plus a whole new set of skills. With the technology and connectivity of our current world it’s easy to think that we no longer live in a frontier society. But we do. And we are proof of it, read our story here.
We have always had the mindset of scanning the world around us for opportunities. We recognized many years ago that in a future defined by the digital world and automation, change would be a constant. The changes that are happening now are coming to all of us at a rate faster than we have ever experienced before. Automation does this. It speeds things up. We saw that traditional jobs and work styles were disappearing, so we didn’t ‘hitch our pony to that wagon’ so to speak. However there is still much ‘work’ to be done in this accelerated world. And staking a new claim is still possible.
To ‘stake our claim’ we have taken some very deliberate actions which we’ll share with you.
Here are our top 3 pioneering traits:
1) Today’s pioneers need to be continually developing themselves so they can adapt to what’s ahead. We are avid readers and constant researchers of innovative ideas and new ways of thinking. We constantly look to see how what we are learning connects to or is relevant to what we already know.
2) Courage, resilience and grit are still a part of a pioneering mindset – build them within yourself. Big dreams don’t happen overnight. The patience and perseverance we have had to employ to make headway while building our ideas into new offerings has often tested us in ways we never imagined when we first started down this path. And to tell you the truth – we frickin’ love feeling strong and determined because of the challenges we’ve overcome.
3) The call to action for anyone ‘staking a claim’ is deliberate and continuous skill-building. Researching, planning and reflecting are necessary activities, but to stay relevant and create a demand for what we’re offering means that we put our ideas into action. We test our steps and processes with others who could benefit; we stay out in the open and let ourselves be seen so that others can travel in the same steps if that’s their direction; and we constantly say ‘yes’ to doing things we haven’t mastered yet so that we can get better.
Back in the day, pioneers chose their own adventures. Those who chose to leave behind the comforts of established lifestyles and communities had to strengthen themselves from within. They headed for new territory believing they could create new opportunities and build new communities. Early pioneers knew they would be faced with challenges and hard work before the new would take hold. They held onto the hope that they could thrive and prosper. This is still the journey for pioneers today. It is not for everyone. But it is for you if you want to follow your dreams into new territory – to stake a claim in your own unique place in the world. Will you choose this adventure for yourself?
